Whenever I imagine Byzantium, I feel in colour but for some reason think in black and white. It was such a long time ago. Perhaps it was Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev that makes me associate the age with dampness and dark shadow. But this shot quickly reminds me there was color (As does Tarkovsky reminds us in the final moment of Andrei Rublev where we see Sovcolor icons for the first time). All them black robes; all them grey beards; all them icons: colour!
The Greek Orthodox Church, a breathing living time tunnel to Byzantium (well in aesthetics and ritual anyway).
