While editing Tina and Steven’s wedding from last week, I noted a frame that I can’t remember taking but simply popped out of my screen. As I don’t set up shots, I am always in a mode of perpetual discovery – during and after an event. These are the pleasures of dwelling in a space where time forgets itself.
The ninth installment of my Men and Meaning project is now up. Check it out at: http://www.menandmeaning.com/

Whenever I imagine Byzantium, I feel in colour but for some reason think in black and white. It was such a long time ago. Perhaps it was Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev that makes me associate the age with dampness and dark shadow. But this shot quickly reminds me there was color (As does Tarkovsky reminds us in the final moment of Andrei Rublev where we see Sovcolor icons for the first time). All them black robes; all them grey beards; all them icons: colour!
The Greek Orthodox Church, a breathing living time tunnel to Byzantium (well in aesthetics and ritual anyway).
Belinda Woods plays in several ensembles. She plays soft and she plays loud. At the CD launch of Voyeur with her band Low Res, she played kicking loud (though probably not as loud as when she plays in Bohjass….) I know its not all about volume, but there is definitely something visceral about her and her band’s sound. (And probably the delicacy of my ears).

If you are in Perth between 6th September – 7th October, go to the Perth Centre of Photography where the IRIS Award for portraiture is being held. I am a finalist, with this picture. See it in all its metre squareness.
Two filmmakers who are usually a lot of fun. But having your picture in international film catalogs is a serious business. Richard Tuohy and Mark La Rosa are influential figures in Melbourne’s independent film scene. They have both produced challenging and innovative works that you will never see in a Tropfest program.
